Artist's Comments

A reference drawing (only figurative, not the actual composition) for a painting I hope to one day undertake. To be precise, when I find out where I'm going to spend the next three months of my life.

It's for a series relating to archetypes, spectacles, our peculiar 'brand' of freedom, self-fulfilling prophecies, the Jungian shadow & collective unconscious, ennui, isolation, Utopia/Dystopia, emotional & psychological fracturing... and all that good stuff.

I know this is all very vague and disjointed but conceptually I never work within a specific narrative. It's too stifling for me and I tend to lose interest when I don't allow myself that freedom to branch out, and I prefer work that engages dialogue rather than dictating it. Which is why I really dislike talking about my work, and often find that people who do tend to attribute too much artspeak bullshit and therefore limit any interpretation by already providing it - theirs, that is. I also understand that for a lot of people being cryptic has to do with appearing more mysterious than they actually are. And so, as a concession, I hereby supply you with key words that may indicate somewhat the direction that I am taking... hoping that it might engage you in some ways (atleast in the future when I get around to the series). :)

Thank you for looking. Feedback is encouraged and immensely appreciated.

the eyes are beautiful. Were the fingers supposed to be so thin in comparison to the hand?
Overall it is a very lovely piece. The only way I am able to draw like this is to look at a photograph. I admire those who can do this from the mind alone.

Condemnation and Salvation: I've been on both sides of the coin and have to say I prefer the side that has been covered by blood.

Thanks very much, but to be honest I used myself and a mirror as a reference. I'm simply unable to get anatomy right without some kind of reference, whether life or pictorial. That's not to say that this is a self-portrait, I just used myself as a template to further build on an image I already had in mind.

As for the hands... Well have I thin fingers, and broad palms. Most people think I have really pretty hands until I'm like, no wait, look at my fingers in proportion to my palm. Then they're all, ewww. ;)

I like this a lot, the odd gesture and the strangely shaped hands. The hand to head proportions kind of remind me of this era [link] ( :

Wonderfully done. The stylization is so nice, and I love the mood you have achieved. It's emotive and simple at the same time, as well as both honest and mysterious. And I totally appreciate what you said in the comments; it's best to be neither overly mysterious/pretentious about a concept, nor overbearing/one-minded about the interpretation of your work. I like the idea of having a framework idea, and then making intuitive decisions in the process. And your concept sounds like it will be really interesting. Lovely piece!

Thank you very much for the kind words and the :+fav:. Intuition is integral to how I work.

You're absolutely spot on. A major stylistic influence in my current work is icon art from various cultures and periods, including the Byzantine art.

It not for purely aesthetic reasons, but also in dealing with the nature of semiotics in contemporary society, which prefers the sign to the thing signified. Icon art rarely portrays individualism as opposed to an idealised (or by the same token, caricaturized) representation. The irony of the present age is (in my opinion) the fact that even individualism has been turned into a symbol, and to a degree an illusion.
